Revenue Team
Our revenue team plays an integral role with regard to Guidewire’s current operations, our growth objectives, and the broader finance organization. The revenue team has an important seat at the table with the CFO, CAO, deal desk and sales as it relates to deals, new products, licensing, and business model expansion.  We operate throughout the world today with plans to drive our growth through organic initiatives as well as acquisitions and partnerships. Our revenue team continues to evolve to meet the demands of a growing company that is transitioning to a cloud-based company.  The revenue team receives a lot of exposure with opportunities to influence the long-term direction of the company including how we license and sell our on-premise software, cloud-based services, and implementation/migration services.
Position
As the Senior Director of Revenue, you will report to the Chief Accounting Officer and will be responsible for global revenue recognition accounting team.  The Senior Director will play a pivotal leadership role in the Finance and Accounting organization supporting the Company’s continued track record of strong revenue growth, change management, process and controls improvement, and scaling revenue operations and supporting infrastructure. The position offers opportunities to influence near term transactions as well as the long-term direction of the company.  In this role, you will partner with leaders throughout the company and play an active role advising the global sales team on complex transactions from an accounting perspective. This role requires you to be an expert in revenue recognition literature and US GAAP. You will manage and mentor the revenue team of more than 20 people in a hybrid work-environment and be responsible for overseeing all aspects of revenue recognition including, creating policies and procedures, global training, partnering with SOX and auditors on key controls and quarterly audit requests, and more.

Role Responsibilities

  • Review and document complex customer arrangements and assist our deal desk and sales force in structuring unique transactions while satisfying GAAP requirements for revenue recognition, particularly related to license and subscription arrangements, migration arrangements, contract modifications, and implementation/migration services,
  • Key business partner to finance and senior sales executives to ensure that the global revenue accounting function delivers timely, accurate, optimized and reliable revenue reporting
  • Work closely with the sales and sales operations, as well as colleagues in accounting, finance, product development, and cloud operations teams to identify and implement process and system improvements within the quote-to-cash ecosystem
  • Work with product managers to analyze roadmaps for new billing and product functionality
  • Define and manage the customer master and billing processes for world-class operations, innovate and improve billing cycles, improve overall efficiency throughout the ecosystem by sharing best practices, and provide best-in-class reporting
  • Key person for technical revenue accounting guidance to the global organization, which includes research and documentation of revenue recognition positions
  • Partner with professional services on statements of work, pricing, margins and deal structure
  • Ensure complete compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley requirements and provide suggestions to streamline and improve controls
  • Primary liaison with external auditors related to revenue recognition and revenue related controls in order to satisfy all quarterly and annual audit requirements
  • Create revenue processes consistent with month and quarter close calendar and streamline the processes
  • Continuously drive process and system improvements towards best-in-class efficiency and incorporating industry best practices
  • Develop and enhance existing revenue analysis and reporting for internal and external purposes including information required by the audit committee and for quarterly SEC reporting
  • Oversee cost to obtain and royalty accounting activities
  • Work closely with FP&A team to forecast revenue
  • Periodically review, update and develop appropriate policies and procedures for revenue recognition and revenue processes, ensuring compliance with current regulatory guidance and business practices
  • Lead and participate in special projects

Requirements

  • You are a seasoned professional with revenue recognition or similar experience in the software (preferably SaaS) industry who has managed a large team and can provide sound strategic and risk management insights, while efficiently managing day to day activities to ensure compliance. Other requirements include:
  • Strong leadership, relationship development and people management skills who can collaborate with individuals and executives across the company
  • Results orientation with an ability to manage the overall project
  • Excellent multi-tasker who sees the “bigger picture
  • Strong software revenue recognition knowledge under US GAAP (ASC 606)
  • 10-15 years of progressive experience in accounting or finance
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to present information to all levels of management, including the board of directors
  • Ability to influence and negotiate with others
  • Ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment
  • Strong project management and organization skills
  • Ability to roll-up sleeves and work with team members in a hands-on capacity as required
  • BA / BS degree in Accounting or Finance
  • CPA, MBA or equivalent preferred
  • Big 4 accounting experience preferred
