I joined Guidewire as a Software Engineer and in my time here, I've been given the chance to build new products, grow practices from the ground up, develop new programs and experience so many sides of the business. Guidewire has always been a place where we are not afraid to take risks, where we learn from our mistakes and always strive to improve. And a day doesn't go by where I don't feel challenged or honoured to be working with the people I do. They're fantastic – smart, motivated, great team players who always seek to improve the way we do things. It creates a fun environment to work in, punctuated by the not-so-occasional bad joke! Add a passionate executive team, a culture where everyone has a voice and strong values, and why would I want to go anywhere else?!

I spend a lot of my time working from home or on the road as I don't live near the office but this doesn't mean I'm disconnected from the team – far from it. We're a social group and there's almost always someone up for grabbing a meal or a drink when working on a project. We have sports and social committees in Dublin and Exton that put on really fun events like Frothy Fridays, Office Olympics, and TravelCenter and it's always great when we get together for our annual services events.

The work we do? It's making a real difference in the insurance industry. That might not be the most glamorous industry out there but it's the one people turn to when disaster strikes. Customers see us as trusted advisors and we make informed decisions which we are willing to stand by. We're constantly seeking to do better and be even better for our customers and our team members. We take risks but they're rational risks and everyone works together towards a common goal. That dynamic makes Guidewire an exciting place to work because there are always new opportunities as we continuously seek to grow and evolve. Joining the team, you'll be valued and actively supported with your goals and career aspirations as you work on good – and challenging – projects. "The learning never stops."

Unconventional – that's one word to describe my career path at Guidewire! I joined in 2008 in an experimental role to help our prospective customers build business justifications. That then turned into Value Consulting and as a ‘hobby' on the side, we started to get data from existing customers for a benchmarking program. That program became extremely popular and evolved into our first ever SaaS product, Guidewire Live. I'm now responsible for leading the business functions for all products in Guidewire's Data & Analytics product family including DataHub, InfoCenter, Live and Predictive Analytics. I've been here seven years and in that time, I've had more career opportunities and variety than I had in my 15 years of working in enterprise software before.

I love working with smart people and incredible leaders in an environment where hard challenges are both embraced and solved. Every day I learn something new. Something new about the industry, about our products or about how to make our business successful. The learning never stops. Going through product certification training for ClaimCenter 5 when I started was one of the best software training classes I've ever been a part of. I've also completed my MBA and CPCU since starting here – don't ask me how I did it all!

As Guidewire is successful and growing fast, there are lots of opportunities. If you feel like you want a bigger challenge, there's always one there for the taking. No two days are the same, no two months or years are the same either. It certainly keeps you on your toes! And you get to work with intelligent and truly exceptional people too, in a culture that rewards good ideas. It's a special combination and one I've not found in many work places. From someone thinking of joining Guidewire, I look for a real eagerness to learn and the ability to adjust to new ideas. The world and our industry are changing so quickly that it's much less about your direct experience and what you know today – it's about how you assimilate new information and pick up impactful new concepts.

"From programmer to Vice President – and still enjoying every challenge."

We're the premier software provider for the P&C insurance industry. But what's Guidewire like as a workplace? Thoughtful, gratifying and challenging. People love our products and there is always plenty of interesting technical work happening. Solving intricate problems is one of the best aspects of working here. I started as a programmer and I've moved through multiple levels of management, helping the Product Development team grow and scale up. The great thing about Guidewire is that as we grow, there's lots of scope to continue evolving our technology to meet future customer demands.

It's fast-paced, yes, but a thoughtful environment to work in. People are considerate of each other, honest and respectful. That's one of the key things I look for in new team members: humility. Technical skills are, of course, important but as well as competence and ambition, you have to care about the people you're working with. We're a collaborative team and in Product Development, we've recently been through formal Agile training and have weekly Dev Talks and Manager Talks. I'd encourage anyone who wants to gain valuable experience and solve challenging problems to join us. As well as the technical opportunities, the people are great to work with too.

There's something truly exciting about working at Guidewire. Everyone here is focused on making a product that positively impacts people's lives and you can't help but be swept up in the palpable energy of the environment. The culture is fast-paced, fun, growth-orientated and collaborative. We're all invested in the success of the company and there's a very supportive network between us all to achieve that goal. I really like that we have the opportunity to impact the company's future and that we're not only encouraged to be creative and share our ideas, but also to act upon them. The challenges and fascinating nature of the work means that I constantly feel like I'm growing and moving forward.

There is so much to learn here and you can pick and choose your direction. You can learn new technologies, improve your skills or develop new ones and build a fulfilling career without compromising on work-life balance. As well as advancing within my role, I've had continued training on things like project management, mentoring and communication skills. There's definitely lots of opportunity here. Creativity is encouraged and your contributions are valued.

Before I joined Guidewire, I was intrigued by what they do. And once I met the people, I knew I wanted to pursue a career here. The teams are great and I love working with fun, intelligent people that I now call friends. We're all based in an open space, which is filled with lots of laughter. Working with such talented individuals and cutting-edge technology in an environment where I'm constantly progressing makes me proud to call Guidewire home.

Other than the financial benefits of working for a successful technology company, I enjoy being part of a company that has a clear direction and strategy. Guidewire’s experiencing tremendous growth and change – that was one of the things that first attracted me. I’m based in Foster City.
